Most 'undetectable' interview tools are never tested by the person relying on them. Here's how screen capture really works on a Mac, why some overlays leak, and how to verify yours before it matters.
If you're relying on an on-screen assistant during an interview, the only question that matters is: does it show up in what the other person sees? Most people never actually check — they trust a marketing word like "undetectable" and hope. Here's how to stop hoping and know.
How screen sharing actually captures your screen
When you share your screen on Zoom, Google Meet, or Microsoft Teams, or when someone records with the built-in macOS tools, the app asks the operating system for the contents of your screen or a specific window. macOS composites what's visible and hands it over.
The key detail: macOS lets an app mark a window to be excluded from that capture. When a window is marked this way, the capture the meeting app receives is composited without it. You still see the window on your own display; the screen share doesn't.
That's the mechanism real screen-share invisibility depends on. It is not magic, and it is not the same thing as "hiding" a window behind another.
Why some tools leak
A lot of interview assistants are browser extensions. Their overlay is drawn inside a browser tab or window — which is part of exactly the surface a screen-share captures. So when you share "your screen" or even "that browser window," the overlay can go right along with it. That's the source of the horror stories: an answer panel popping into view mid–coding round.
A native app that draws its overlay in a separate window marked for capture exclusion is a fundamentally different design. The overlay isn't inside the shared surface; it's deliberately left out of it.
The honest limits
No screen-hiding technology is a universal cloak, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling:
- A phone camera pointed at your screen captures everything. Software can't stop photons.
- Some Apple system services (like FaceTime screen sharing on older macOS versions) capture below the normal layer and can still see the overlay.
- Proctoring software that demands a webcam, a room scan, or deep system access is a different threat model entirely — and against a camera watching your face, no screen tool helps.
The good news: none of those are how a normal Zoom/Meet/Teams interview works. But you should know the edges.
How to actually verify it — in five minutes
Don't trust the claim. Test it yourself:
- Start a real screen recording with the built-in macOS screen recorder (or a screen-share preview in Zoom/Meet).
- Bring up your assistant's overlay so it's clearly on your own screen.
- Stop the recording and watch it back. Is the overlay in the video, or not?
- Repeat for each app you'll actually use — the behavior can differ between Zoom, Meet, Teams, and the OS recorder, and between macOS versions.
- Do it on your machine and your OS version. A demo on someone else's Mac proves nothing about yours.
If the overlay is absent from the recording, you have real evidence. If it's there, you just saved yourself from finding out live.
